Re: moms meds still good. where can I donate them?

amagic2u,

i am very sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. please accept my condolences. i hope you have a good support system around you to help you get through this difficult time. if not, then please feel free to pm me. i'm a little behind on them, but you can be sure that i will answer yours if you need to talk.

to answer your original question, no, there is no place that will accept leftover meds. here's the problem with that. it is illegal for anyone, other than the person with that rx, to use prescription medication which was not prescribed to them. even if they have another rx for the same thing. iow, say, for example, i have a script for 30 t3s and get it filled, but then i run out (or lose the pills or whatever)before i'm up for a refill. and you also have a script for 30 t3s and get it filled, but you still have some pills left. it wouldn't matter if we were prescribed the exact same thing, LEGALLY, you wouldn't be allowed to share your pills with me.

now then, if the meds you want to donate were otc, they still wouldn't be donatable (if that's a word) for safety reasons. do you remember, i think it was sometime in the 80s, before they had to put the safety seals on the medicine bottles, someone had laced a bunch of otc tylenol with cyanide? and people died from it. no one in the medical community is going to take any chances when it comes to unsealed/ used medicines.

now, if you have otc meds that are brand new and sealed, well, that might be a different story, as they might still even be returnable to the store from which they were bought. but don't quote me on that one, i'm not sure what the exact laws are concerning unopened meds. but if they are already opened, then the only thing to do is to dispose of them.
