Disclaimer: I've always despised RL, but I swear my hatred for him right now is based on his current hypocrisy, not on his politics. This is not a political post. This whole thing makes me mad. Even Limbaugh was demonizing the drugs and calling them on their addictive properties. But his behavior over the years tells us otherwise: he felt he needed pain relief, and his needs weren't met by doctors. Now that he has been caught, he comes clean, well how convenient. CNN had a dr. on today who talked about addiction, and how most people can be put on Buprenorphine or Methadone, because there's a school of thought that says opiate addiction is so hard to cure it's probably best to consider maintenance. What upset me is that he implied maintenance was OK for most shmoes out there, but he hoped to hell that a person like Rush, who has to be functional, and is highly productive (or some similar wording), would not opt for such a second rate approach to addiction. Rush is going to come out of this smelling like a rose, leading the crusade against these horrid horrid drugs. It was only mentioned in passing that he needed drugs for pain. I say in passing, because the main focus of the news stories was not the fact that these meds are highly successful in treating pain, let alone have the ability to give millions of pain sufferers a life that is not only bearably but pleasurable and productive, but that they are highly addictive drugs that eventually lead a person to self-destruction if not death. CNN and Rush had a chance to do something positive and undo some of the damage caused by the Oxy-abuse hysteria, but they took the mob-mentality low road and jumped on the narcotics-bashing bandwagon. Shame on them. |
