In this case it looks like the kids were being coached, helped, and offered the tools they needed to fool even the most careful OP's
And I do not think the part about the kids mentioning their age is true.
Reporters and investigators are not "always" honest and may invent a few things if it helps them :-)

In general I believe the fault lies with both the parents & the OPs. For the parents, its not a wise idea to let Junior spend hours in a closed bedroom on the PC with no idea what he's doing or who he's talking to.
