Re: going to mexico, live in texas, buying rx, read...

i posted this on the VIP side a few months ago ~ HOPE IT HELPS!

hi. i was looking here for info last week on TJ farmacias. i crossed in yesterday around noon, & just got back to LA last nite.
here's what i found in legit farmacias within walking distance from the border ~ 2 bottles (50 tabs each) of Somacid (350 mg carisoprodol) for $46, totally legal to buy OTC & carry into the states with no script. i also brought an old bottle of 1mg Lorazepam to see if i could get refilled. no problemo, i forget the price but they were close to $.75 per pill. the pharmacist was even nice enough to individually take them all out of the foil wrappers & place them in my old bottle so i had no trouble at the border ~ VERY COOL!
as far as pain meds go, they are readily available in SOME farmacias without a script, but the prices are quite high. being that hydro is a US product, therefore imprted to mexico for sale, you can expect to pay approx $5 for a Watson 7.5/500, or $7 for the 10/500. oxycontin varied from $55-70 for ONE 80mg pill & $30 for a 40mg (since the US government has cracked down on control of these). also available was a small round yellow pill of morphine (dilaudid?) for $25 ~ they said either 4 or 40mg, i cant quite remember how they are rated. also, everyplace has Tylex (equal to a tylenol #3), 30 tabs for around $50.
ONE THING TO BE AWARE OF WHEN SHOPPING IN TJ ~ lots of bicycle cops patrolling in pairs. if they see you go in & out of a farmacia they may stop you & ask for ID & what you were looking to buy. after my first attempt (i left the farmacia empty handed) i was stopped & checked out. i showed the officers my old bottles & stated i was just trying to get refills. they were very nice & let me go about my way. BUT if i had purchased anything that required a mexican script (tylex, lorazepam, oxy, morphine, etc) i would have had a bad experience with the mexican jail system! i have read that some farmacias are corrupt & work in cahoots with the cops to catch the occasional gringo with illegal meds. if you don't have an old US bottle to put the goods in, its definately best to go the safe route & pay an extra $25 (or so) dollars for a mexican script so you can carry the stuff around without worry. BUT that doesn't mean you can take mex scrips across the border without a US doctors script! (that is another thread entirely!)
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING OFF OF ANYONE ON THE STREET!!! the legit farmacias will have everything you need.
crossing the border in was no hassle. on the way out was really no hassle either (xcept for the line that stretched a mile long in the baking hot sun, & took about an hour to get through). since i was just doing the refill thing i wasn't worried ~ i had kept my old bottles & receipt for the Somas just in case. they x-rayed my bag & sent it right on through. nobody even asked if i had anything to declare (first time thats happened!)
so yes a daytrip to TJ can be enjoyable ~ not only for the meds, but to soak up the culture & buy some cheap trinkets, etc.
i did not know this before hand, but apparently this past weekend was election weekend in Mexico. that means NO SALE OF ALCOHOL AT ALL ANYWHERE! imagine that, in TJ! needless to say that law alone helped to keep the crowds down.
i hope this info can help some peeps in need. just remember to play it smart if going down there.
