Re: Getting Disability Benefits (US)

Quote:

I'm not sure the $900 min for SSDI is right. Both my husband and I recieve it and neither of us gets that amount. In fact, I get less than what someone on SSI gets due to the fact that when I worked I earned very low wages. I was going to college and working at mostly min. wage jobs which back then was very low. I believe they go by how much you paid into the system. Also, you get paid monthly. At least with SSDI you get your check on a Wed and which Wed is determined by your last name. They used to pay on the 3rd of each month (I still get mine then) but have changed it.

That's funny because I used to make quite a bit of money and when I lost my job 2 years ago due to my depression and anxiety (I should have taken advantage of my disability insurance but was too clueless at the time) but now they say I will only receive $850/month so it must be based on the last 10 quarters I worked. I would hope that I would get a phat retroactive check since I didn't make as much then and they person who took my initial application put the time for disability down as when I left my high paying job. I made a paltry 10 bucks an hour after that. And what is the deal with SSI. The woman told me that that would kick in before SSDI as a bridge to SSDI because it takes so long. Man it seems the sytem isn't exactly rigged to provide you with you the benefits you've PAID IN. I dunno though.
