Speaking generally, our politicians are lazy and selfish.

The soccer mom who comes home after a long day of hauling her kids around decides to take a bottle of wine and the paper into the bath to relax. As she gets drunk and reads the paper, she sees a sensationalized story about a kid's OD and immediately forms an opinion about the issue. What she doesn't see is a story concerning the thousands of people with legitimate needs who are undermedicated and discriminated against, whether it be in the doctor's office or at the pharmacy, and her own dependence on alcohol, which kills more people yearly that prescription meds ever will.

Our politicans cater to these people and this mentality. It is deplorable. Why does selfishness so often win over what's "right" (i.e., the decision that BENEFITS the greatest number of people)!
