Someone may have already told you this - but tramadol is a controled substance. It is a schedule 4 controled substance. Last I heard, Xanax was also a schedule 4 controled substance along with Valium and Ativan and ambien. Hydrocodone is a schedule 3 drug while oxycodone is a schedule 2. So while tramadol is not as highly scheduled of a drug as some others, is is indeed a controled drug.
