RE: wiping HDD's - here is quote from Norton Wipe Info documentation:
"Wipe Info offers the ability to remove all traces of selected files or folders from your hard drive. It has the ability to perform a Department of Defense compliant wipe of file data.

I think DoD compliant says it all! There are other similar utilities from other vendors.
