Regarding the opium, most of those pods are from Tasmania. Bear in mind that the majority of Tasmanian pods are an engineered species with thebaine being the main alkaloid, as opposed to morphine and codeine. http://www.regional.org.au/au/asa/2001/plenery/1/fist.htm. (Thebaine being a precursor for many semi-synthetic narcotics.)
I know very little about opiate chemistry, but I do know that raw thebaine is barely psychoactive, is more stimulating than sedating and I've had trouble finding any reliable info on its toxicity. So unless you're sure those pods are not the modified variety, they're probably gonna be more use to you in a vase than as a painkiller, unless you're home-cooking some hydro.
