I believe you are referring to laudanum per Websters: a tinture of opium. Often given to women circa 1800's the way paregoric ( a camphorated tinture of opium) was given to childeren early 1900's. Gramma said it fixed everything." laudid" that you mentioned was on the rite track, but you probably derived that from dilaudid, which of course does indeed trace back to opium. But in a much stronger way. Sorry to get off track.
