Oh don't get me started on this subject!! I get so angry when the media and government try to regulate how doctors treat their patients. You know, I worked for a lab which did drug testing, and we also collected urine drug screens. One of our clients was the state medical board, who oversaw the licencing and discipling of doctors, RNs, PA's Etc. There were so many doctors that had to come in for drug screens, it was shocking. I bet not many of you know that if a doctor is at all questioned about diverting drugs or some other impropriety like overprescribing, the licensing board jumps all over them (At least in WA state) The doctors would have to submit to observed drug screens at random times. That means they would get a call from the board telling them they have four hours to get to the lab for testing, and then we had to watch them pee to make sure they didn't cheat. I tell you its very strange to watch the top neurosurgeon in the city peeing in a little cup! If the test came back positive or they didn't show up, then they would get their licence yanked! Now we had hundreds of doctors who had to do this, many I personally worked with or had seen-and they were all their because of some sort of prescription problem. Thats why docs have to watch their backs so much! They really get watched more closely with narcotics than we do, and if they are suspected of any fooling around with the system they could get in a lot of trouble. Just wanted to share this story.
