Re: Opiate Treatment of Refractory Depression

ok, quick question. does buprenorphine(temgesic) in itself act as an opioid antagonist? or is it the addition of another substance (naloxone)as such that makes it that way (suboxone)? i have been wondering that for a while. i apologize if that has been answered on your post, but as i can't sit in front of my computer long enough to digest all of that, i thought i'd ask. plus, my adhd doesn't help.

According to what I've read buprenorphine by itself does demonstrate a narcotic antagonist activity. The naloxone does too, of course, but the difference between the buprenorphine and the naloxone is that buprenorphine is a partial agonist opiate while naloxone is a full narcotic agonist.
